Reading the code is only the start
When the light comes on, your car stores a trouble code. Plenty of parts stores will read that code for free, and that is a fine starting point, but the code points to a system, not always the exact broken part. Common Reasons the Light Comes On
A loose or worn gas cap
This is the one we love to find, because it is the cheapest. A cap that is loose, cracked, or worn lets fuel vapors escape and trips the light. We check it first before anyone starts chasing expensive parts.
Worn spark plugs or ignition parts
Worn plugs and ignition parts cause misfires, rough idling, and lousy fuel economy. Replacing them usually brings the smoothness and the gas mileage right back.
A failing catalytic converter
A bad converter hurts performance and emissions, and it will fail you at state inspection. It is also one of the pricier fixes, which is exactly why we confirm the converter is really the problem and not an upstream issue before we recommend replacing it.
A dirty mass airflow sensor
This sensor measures the air going into your engine, and it gets dirty over time from everyday driving. When it does, you get stalling, rough running, and poor fuel economy. Often a cleaning is all it needs, so we check that before condemning the part.
